The Brand Differentiation Check: Is There a Reason to Choose You?

5 minute read

The Brand Differentiation

The Brand Differentiation Check is a free diagnostic from Dia Creative that compares your public products, claims, proof, price, and use cases against two named competitors, the same comparison an AI shopping assistant is effectively running every time it decides which brand to recommend for a given question.

You provide

Your store and two comparable competitors.

You get

The strengths you can defend, and the claims that blur together.

Why “readable” isn’t the same as “chosen”

Being technically understandable to AI shopping systems is a starting point, not a finish line. Once a system can parse your product data, it still has to decide why your brand, specifically, is the right answer instead of the two other brands making a nearly identical claim. In a world where AI turns every category into a shortlist, the brands that keep getting selected are the ones with claims a system can actually distinguish, backed by evidence it can point to, not just adjectives.

What the check actually compares

You choose two real, comparable competitors, and the tool reads all three stores’ public products, marketing claims, proof points (reviews, credentials, guarantees, press), pricing, and stated use cases side by side. The output isn’t a winner or loser verdict. It’s a map of where your positioning is genuinely distinct and defensible, and where your claims overlap so closely with a competitor’s that an AI system (or a human shopper) has no real basis to pick you over them.

A common finding: claims that blur together

The most frequent gap this check surfaces isn’t a missing feature, it’s language. “Premium quality,” “trusted by thousands,” and “crafted with care” show up on nearly every product page in nearly every category, which means they don’t actually help an AI system (or a shopper) choose between you and a competitor making the identical claim. The fix usually isn’t a bigger claim, it’s a more specific one: what, exactly, do you do differently, and what evidence backs it up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pick which two competitors to compare against?

Choose the two brands you actually lose consideration to most often, the ones a customer would realistically be comparing you against, rather than the biggest name in your category if that’s not who you’re really competing with.

Does this tool log into competitor stores or scrape private data?

No. Like the Store Readability Audit, it reads a bounded sample of public pages only, for your store and the two competitors you name.

Should I run this before or after the Store Readability Audit?

Either order works, but the Store Readability Audit is the more useful baseline if you’re not sure whether AI can parse your store at all. If you already know your data is clean and the real question is whether your brand stands out, start here.

What if the report finds we look identical to a competitor?

That’s a genuinely useful finding, not a bad one. It tells you exactly where your positioning needs sharper, more specific claims and proof, which is a fixable content and messaging problem, not a fundamental flaw in the brand.
